Dan Reynolds: “When my relationship with Aja Volkman ended, I was so sad. I told my mum I don’t want any relationship again. She told me she has someone for me, the daughter of her close friend, a United States. She wanted me to marry a United States Woman but I believe love doesn’t have anything to do with nationality. It can come from anywhere. So I didn’t like the idea. So when Aja Volkman came for a visit the first time I was worried my mum might not like her because she’s not from United States. I left her with my mum and went to the gym, when I came back I was surprised to see the both of them talking like they already knew each other before. I wanted her to come to my room but she was so busy with my mum that I had to tell my mum in deep a language that I want a little bit privacy with her. She understood and told Aja Volkman she wants to go the supermarket with my son, I’m so lucky to have someone like her and I hope we live together forever.”

Dan Reynolds Opens Up About Love, Family, and Finding Strength After Heartbreak

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds has never been shy about wearing his heart on his sleeve, but in a recent reflection he opened up more candidly than ever about the role his family played in reshaping his outlook on love.

“When my relationship with Aja Volkman ended, I was so sad,” Reynolds admitted. “I told my mum I didn’t want any relationship again. I was completely closed off.” His mother, however, had other ideas. Hoping to see her son happy, she suggested he meet the daughter of one of her close friends — a young woman from the United States.

But for Reynolds, the suggestion didn’t sit right. “I believe love doesn’t have anything to do with nationality,” he explained. “It can come from anywhere.”

That perspective was put to the test when Aja Volkman later came for a visit. Reynolds confessed that he was nervous about how his mother might react, given that she wasn’t the woman she had envisioned for him. To his surprise, the meeting went far better than expected.

“I left them together while I went to the gym. When I came back, I was shocked to see them talking like they already knew each other. They were laughing, sharing stories — it felt natural,” Reynolds recalled with a smile.

Though he wished for some private time, Reynolds respected the bond that was quickly forming between the two women. Eventually, his mother excused herself, offering to take his son to the supermarket so the couple could enjoy a quiet moment together.

For Reynolds, it was a powerful reminder of how love — whether romantic or familial — grows best when it is rooted in understanding and acceptance. “I’m so lucky to have someone like her,” he said warmly of Volkman. “And I hope we live together forever.”
