In a remarkable act of generosity and social responsibility, former tennis champion and entrepreneur Maria Sharapova has donated her entire $12.9 million in recent bonus and sponsorship earnings to fund a large-scale homeless shelter initiative.
The funds will go directly toward the construction of 150 transitional housing units, complete with 300 shelter beds, as part of a long-term project aimed at combating the homelessness crisis in major U.S. cities, starting with Los AngeleI’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew I wanted to be part of the solution,” Sharapova said during a press conference. “This isn’t just about housing—it’s about dignity, stability, and giving people a real shot at rebuilding their lives.”
The initiative, in partnership with the Sharapova Foundation and local nonprofit Bridge Forward LA, is set to break ground this fall. The facility will offer not only safe housing, but also wraparound services including mental health counseling, job training, addiction recovery programs, and childcare support.
Sharapova’s donation comes at a time when homelessness has reached crisis levels in many U.S. cities. Experts estimate that the new project could impact over 1,000 lives annually, through both direct shelter and community outreach services.
Local officials praised Sharapova’s commitment. Mayor Carla Ramirez. of Los Angeles called it a game-changing moment in public-private cooperation.”
This isn’t Sharapova’s first philanthropic endeavor. Since retiring from tennis, she has launched several initiatives focused on education, mental health, and post-career athlete support. However, this marks her single largest personal donation to date.
